The Manendez brothers, who were convicted of killing their parents at Beverly Hills Palace in 1989, will discover whether they can be released from prison.
Lael Mindez, 56, and his 53-year-old brother Eric, is serving a prison in prison without conditional release due to murders in their father’s gun, mother-Jose and Kitie Mindez.
The brothers have maintained their abuse of the abuse of their parents since they were accused for the first time of murders.
A Netflix A series of drama about brotherhood called Monsters, which was broadcast in September, pushed them back to the spot Their family.
The lawyers of the brothers in Los Angeles were asked to review the ruling on them, and they may pave the way for their release.
A decision was expected in a dissatisfaction session scheduled for December 11 last year, but it was returned after several times.
But what is the issue of freedom of the brothers, is there new evidence – and why was the decision late?
An old defense with new evidence
The Manendez brothers, who were at the age of 21 and 18 at the time, admitted that they were shot before being convicted of first -class killing and conspiracy to kill in 1996.
But they claim that they killed them in self -defense after they were subjected to physical, emotional and sexual assault over many years, including harassment by their father.
Public prosecutors at that time claim that there is no evidence of any sexual assault. They said that the brothers were millions of dollars after their parents.
The jury in the first trial in 1993 was subjected to a dead end before the jury found them in their second trial, and they rejected the death penalty in favor of life without the conditional release.
But their lawyers argue that due to the change of community views on sexual assault, the brothers may not be convicted of first -class death and were sentenced to life imprisonment without the conditional release today.
They say they should have been accused of wrongdoing instead of killing, but this was not a choice for the jury during the second trial.
The defense team also revealed a letter written by Eric Mendez to his cousin, who dates back to months before the killing, and who say he is hinting at his abuse by his father.

George Jaskoun participated in the Los Angeles County lawyer (DA) for a short period of time to his Instagram page before deleting the post.
In the handwritten letter, Eric wrote: “I was trying to avoid my father … every night, I kept awake that he might come.”
He also said that he was “afraid” and that he needs to “get it out of my mind” and “stop thinking about it.”
Roy Rossilo, a former member of the Minudo band, spoke of the Mendez + Menudo Documentary Film series: Khan Al -Bayad, claiming that he was sexually assaulted by Jose Minindies in adolescence in the eighties.
The band was signed according to the RCA record at the time, as Jose Mainndes was the chief official in the operations, and Mr. Rossilo claims to be anesthetized and raped.
How can they be released?
The former lawyer in Los Angeles County, George Gaskoun, requested the Los Angeles County Supreme Court judge, Michael Jessic, to review their convictions before leaving the role in December.
He recommended that they be given a 50 -year -old revised penalty, which makes them immediately qualified for the conditional release of young people because they were less than 26 years old when they killed their parents.
The judge was asked to look at whether the husband had been rehabilitated, based on their behavior in prison.
A document by lawyers highlights some of their achievements while behind bars, including both of them get several degrees and contribute to society.
He recounts the “Lyle Mentez” prison program called Greenspace as one example, and adds that both brothers have obtained low -risk assessment degrees, and it appears that Lyle did not participate in one battle during his period in the prison.
Lawyers also presented the letter written by Eric to his cousin as a new evidence, saying that he did not see the jury when he was sentenced to the brotherhood in 1996 and could affect their decision.
Roy Rossilo also made a sign of his alleged rape by Jose Menendes to the Brotherhood’s lawyer, who says it is another evidence of his supposed abusive nature.
At a press conference, Mr. Gascon explained that the review was not to determine whether or not the brothers killed their parents, saying it was “realistic” and “firm”.
He also said that more than 300 people were resenting during his term as a lawyer in the province, and they have already been re -deposited.
Why was the session late?
Judge Jesic said he was partial because he needed time to review 17 documents related to the case and was “not ready to move forward.”
But this is also because Da, who recommended the review, Mr. Gascon, was replaced by Nathan Hoshman, who took office on December 2.
The judge said the delay was also giving Hoachman enough time to review the case and technology.
The new DA, a Republican, has been independent, has different views of his predecessor, Mr. Gascon, a democratic known for his progressive views in particular.
The trial was appointed to the end of January, but it was returned again to the march due to the Kalifornia forest fires.
Great changes since the assignment of discontent
The former Da Gascon called for Los Angeles to resent because he believed that the brothers had been rehabilitated in prison, and they felt that their trial would have been treated differently with today’s understanding of how the sexual and physical assault on children.
This gave the Manendez Hope brothers, because when the plaintiffs support resentment, there is a “somewhat assuming” that the court will do so, says Lori Levinson, the former public prosecutor and professor of criminal law at Liwala Law College in Los Angeles.
But behind him, Mr. Hoshman, does not agree to his saying earlier this month, the brothers have repeatedly lied to the reason for the killing of their parents and “shortened” in full responsibility for their crimes.
He opposed discontent, saying that because of “the lack of full insight and the lack of full responsibility for the murders.”
His office presented a 88 -page document urging the judge to withdraw the former DA proposal.
This does not mean that resentment is turned off, but experts like Mrs. Levinson say he greatly reduces the ruling of the judge in favor of the brotherhood.
Another potential road for freedom
In addition to discontent, the brothers also sought their freedom by asking California Governor Gavin New Noireh, who has the ability to free them himself.
Mr. Newsom, who supported Mr. Gascon, excluded a decision until he heard the views of Mr. Hochman on the issue of the brothers.
“The ruler respects the role of the provincial lawyer in ensuring the presentation of justice and realizes that the voters have entrusted the provincial lawyer -elect Hashman to implement this responsibility.”
“The ruler will review Da-Elect and analyze the Manendez case before making any compassionate decisions.”
But even after Mr. Hachman’s decision to pressure the freedom of the brothers, their hopes in Mr. Newos give the compassion that did not disappear.
At the end of February, the governor of the conditional release council ordered the state to investigate whether the brothers would pose a threat to the public.
It was a step celebrated by Mindez’s lawyers, who said in a statement: “The family realizes that the ruler’s action does not mean that he will take the rulings. Instead, this initial step reflects the ruler’s decision at least to obtain the required information in external life.
Mr. Newsom said he wanted to end the conditional release council to evaluate the risk within 90 days. After the evaluation, there will be a hearing that allows the family of the victims and prosecutors to participate in this process, according to the ruler’s office.
Mrs. Levinson suggested that due to the change in the DA office, the compassion is now the best snapshot of brotherhood in freedom.
What the Mainndes family says
Some of the relatives of the extended brothers attended the session on November 25, when the date of resentment was originally set.
Two of their aunts witnessed, which made what the brothers’ lawyer described during a brief press conference as “enthusiastic calls” to send Eric and Layl to the house.
Eric’s daughter said his family is still united in their efforts to bring siblings to the house.
She said in a statement: “Although the judge’s delay was not” the result that we were hoping, we are still optimistic that it represents a step forward in securing their freedom. “
The brothers themselves were to represent the first appearance before the court for years, but the distant feed from San Diego prison, where they were imprisoned, were hindered by technical cases.
On October 17, twenty members of the extended family gathered to attend a press conference in Los Angeles.
The niece of Jose Mindez spoke of their on behalf of the correspondents: “Both sides of the family are united, where they share a new bond of hope.
“This relates to truth, justice and recovery … their continuous prison does not serve any purpose of rehabilitation.”
Ms. Paralet said that the brothers were victims of “a culture that was not ready to listen”, as she called on the provincial lawyer’s office to “take into account the full picture.”
“I had no idea the extent of the mistreatment they had suffered from my brother. None of us did,” Joan Andersen Vandro, the sister of Kitty Mindez, told reporters.
“We know that ill -treatment has long effects, and that shock victims sometimes behave in ways that are difficult to understand.”
The family is not completely united
“The appropriate sentence” for the couple was the prison of life without a conditional release.
His lawyer said: “He believes that there was no harassment of his occurrence.
