ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — President Donald Trump was in Pittsburgh on Friday evening speaking to U.S. Steel workers at the U.S. Steel facility in West Mifflin about the deal between Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel.
Trump detailed what that partnership looks like and the impact it could have on the American economy.
The new venture will keep steel production in the Mon Valley.
“(A) $14 billion commitment to the future of this company that is the single largest investment of any kind in any industry,” Trump said.
In addition to the announcement of the partnership, Trump announced a new tariff on all foreign steel in a measure he’s hoping to keep American made steel more price competitive.
“We are going to impose a 25% increase; we’re going to bring it from 25% to 50% the tariffs on steel into the United States of America, which will even further secure the steel industry in the United States,” Trump said.
The president said he’s very happy with how quickly this process came together and the overall timeline of bringing the two organizations together.
