Turkish Lira; D Fired Posties Open source on September 1st, already making $2000 a month πŸ’ͺ🏻

At the beginning of 2024, I started working on a social media scheduling tool called Posties. I have 10 years of experience as a SWE/Dev team lead, so programming was very easy.

Social scheduling marketing has been around for nearly 20 years. Leading company Hootsuite was founded in 2008. Currently, there are more than 1000 competitors in this marketing.

The first days

I am very strong in marketing. As a marketing person, I worked at an open source company called novo They gained 30,000 stars in two years.

However, I decided not to go the open source route; I mainly focused on search engine optimization (SEO).

So, I hired an UpWork freelancer to access news sites, buy backlinks, and write several articles.

But it was useless. When your website has a very low authority domain, ranking even for easy keywords is difficult. The competition is fierce, and after 4 months of spending about $3k a month, I decided to do what I know and switch to open source.

Back to open source

I opened up my app and the very cool README.md file and released it on Reddit. It was a huge success.

When I realized how powerful it was, I hit Reddit every month with updates on what’s new in Postiz and got the same results over and over again!

  • The discord has blown up to 1,115 members (so far)
  • Docker has been downloaded 584 thousand times!
  • It reached 15 thousand stars
  • Nearly 4K recordings on the cloud.
  • And 2k in MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue)

My main channels were dev.to, Reddit, Indiehackers.com, Hackernoon, and Lemmy.

Successful launch of product research

With the audience I gathered, I launched Product chase.

I have launched many products, and it has not been easy at all.

I used some tactics I usually do:

  • I created one post on X/LinkedIn about Product Hunt and asked people to engage with it.
  • Place your product search on README.md
  • People were asked to vote on the newsletter
  • I asked people to vote on Discord.

It was one of the best product searches I’ve ever done. Postiz finished the first day/week/month.

Work closely with open source contributors

  • The dispute was filled with requests. It was very easy to figure out what to build.
  • Open source contributors have created a great infrastructure for Docker. When I create a new tag, a new Docker tag is created using the built-in docker. I have very little knowledge of DevOPS.
  • It’s got really cool features that made Postiz grow faster!

Final words

Open source is a superpower. Use it and give back to the community, and you will see your product flourish!

And of course! Help me if you can ❀️ I’m happy to get a star so I can produce more features for open source!
