Spain is about to face the challenge of a “black start”

Local conditions

While networks in Spain and Portugal are connected to each other, they contain limited communications elsewhere. The only sources of the outer power of the network come from France and Morocco, which are small, but can be used to help lions start some plants. Each of the two countries full of a water state has enjoyed it, which Spain sees it covers 10 percent of its request and Portugal by 25 percent. This is useful because water plants need very little in the way of the external power source to start operating.

Moreover, both countries invested extensively in renewable energy sources, as Portugal provides about half of its winds of wind and water energy, after closing the last coal factory in 2021. Spain receives about 40 percent of energy from renewable energy sources at the present time.

Solar energy is not an ideal energy source for the start of the black network, given that it is not available for a large part of the day. But the solar panels produce a direct current, as electronic systems match the alternating current of the network. With the right electronics, it can play a major role in maintaining stable frequencies as the network slices are restarted. In productive areas, winds can provide black start energy for other plants and do not need much external energy to start operations. However, it is unclear whether the local winds are equipped for black beginnings or if the local weather will cooperate (a rapid weather examination in different cities indicates that it is relatively calm there).

The batteries enjoy the potential to be incredibly useful, as they also provide a direct current that can be converted into any required frequency, and therefore is used for both power plants or to install the frequency where the network slides are returned online. Unfortunately, none of the countries installed many battery devices so far. This is expected to change during the next few years in parallel with significantly expanded solar energy. However, at the present time, the batteries will not be a great help.

Regardless of the extent to which network operators are able to deal with this task in Spain and Portugal, they are facing a tremendous challenge at the present time. If you see estimates for several days to restore power, it is because failure to face this challenge will leave things in the state they are doing now.
