Scientists have developed a device to re -create food and drink flavors, allowing them to share them from a distance within seconds – but they have not yet fought from hot foods.

They say that the tool, which they called “E-ToASTE”, can be used to enhance virtual reality and augmented reality systems, which enhances overwhelming experiences. It can also be proven useful for biomedical research or even, the team suggests, “for virtual food adventures”.

“Possible applications include overwhelming games, online shopping, distance education, weight management, sensory test, physical rehabilitation and others,” researchers write.

However, the team notes that the system requires more development, not the least of which is the feelings of taste that the device cannot reproduce, such as spices and intensity.

Although it is now possible to share photos, sounds, and even physical sensations with others, the participation in scents or tastes has proven to be more difficult.

Despite the previous attempts by some researchers, the team behind the new study notes that there are many obstacles, not the least of which is to stimulate the tongue directly electronically or warmly allows some tastes to be evoked; The use of chemicals can form reliability problems; And arranging tastes on the tongue means that it is necessary to target certain areas to create certain sensations.

The first is a sensor platform – or “electronic tongue” – captures data on the concentration of five different chemicals to taste in a filter sample of Food or drink sends information wirelessly to the second component. This device uses small electromagnetic pumps to push liquids through a layer of gel containing five chemicals with an edible taste, allowing controlling their delivery to an outlet, placed in the mouth of the recipient.

The five chemicals, which can be mixed before birth, are compatible with those that were discovered in the original consumer element: glucose, which creates a sweet feeling; Strick acid, which produces acid taste; Sodium chloride, which generates salt flavor. The team adds that the system also allows the delivery of flavors to specific areas of the tongue – something they say can be used to investigate the perception of human taste.

“People will get something like straw in their mouth, and thus put it on specific locations when needed,” said Yazan Jia, the co -author of the Ohio State University.

Then the team conducted a number of tests. Among them, 10 volunteers were asked to take samples of various sour intensity in the fluids resulting from the system, with the results that revealed that they were able to do so at a total rate of 70 %.

In another test, six volunteers were asked to take samples from different groups of fluids containing flavor chemicals, with the groups designed to represent five edible elements – lemon juice, cakes, fried eggs, coffee, and fish soup. They were then asked to taste the liquid created by the system and choose the foods they believed to be an actress. In general, they completed the task at a rate of approximately 87 % – although spices have not yet been cracked.

Mariana Aubste, a professor of multi -senses at College University in London, who did not participate in the work, welcomed the study.

“Stimulating taste is a particularly difficult field, and yet the authors seem to provide a convincing integration of taste sensations to enrich digital experiences,” she said.
