I was very impressed by Heidi Allen’s first speech when she left the Conservative Party to join the Independent Group, now known as the UK Change Party. How could the Tory senior leadership ignore such an amazing talent? But I’m afraid I was too disappointed by her performance in the beer and Brexit debate on 14 May, organized by King’s College London. Ms Allen is now Acting Leader of Change UK. But even as her job title has evolved, she seems to have diminished as a politician. Gently questioned by Anand Menon, the Brexit expert at King’s, she gave a series of bland and vague answers suggesting she was incapable of rigorous thinking or strong organisation.
