Meta is scrapping its third-party validation service in the US after nine years and replacing it with a “community feedback” system, similar to the one used by X.

It says it will help promote freedom of expression and stop the removal of harmless content.

Users on sites like Facebook and Instagram It will be able to highlight posts that may be misleading and need more context – rather than leaving it up to external organizations and experts.

“Experts, like everyone else, have their own biases and viewpoints. This has shown up in the choices some have made about what to check and how,” Meta said. “A program that aims to inform has often become a tool for censorship.”

She said the current system “makes too many mistakes, frustrates our users, and too often hinders freedom of expression.”

“A lot of harmless content is censored, many people find themselves wrongly locked in Facebook prison, and we are often too slow to respond when they do,” the company said.

This means that verified content will no longer be demoted, and instead there will be a rating to let users know there is additional information – with this information written and rated by users.

Agreement between people with a range of viewpoints will be a key part of the system to help prevent biased assessments, according to a statement.

There are currently full-screen warnings that you must click on before you can see the verified post.

dead He said the third-party system was “the best and most logical option” in 2016, but things have changed.

Community feedback works well on X and allows “people across a variety of perspectives to decide what kind of context helps other users see,” she said.

Community feedback will be rolled out in the US over the next few months and the model will be refined over the rest of the year.
