Facebook Meta Platforms told Facebook that it is working on the longest surface cable in the world as part of the efforts of a social media giant to connect more people with a high -speed internet.
Meta said that the huge cable that extends more than 31,000 miles would lead to a “leading communication in the industry” in the United States, India, Brazil, South Africa and other regions.
Mita said in a Blog post Friday.
Meta expects the project to be completed by billions of dollars at the end of the contract, but it did not provide a specific year or estimates of its cost.
Technology leaders, including Meta, Google, Amazon and Microsoft, are intense heavily in underlined cables for years as a way to provide more internet at reasonable and reliable prices worldwide. Since more people call the Internet to chat and videos, these investments also enable technology companies to attract more users to their services.
About 95 % of global traffic on the Internet travels via the surface cables, making it the backbone of the Internet, according to the 2024 report of Global digital inclusion partnership.
Like other major technology companies, the social network encourages efforts to build more artificial intelligence tools that can create texts, images and other content. Meta said in her blog publication that the 24 fiber cable project “can help ensure the availability of the benefits of artificial intelligence and other technologies arising for all, regardless of where they live or work.”
The company said it has developed more than 20 surface cables with partners over the past decade. Some Meta cables included at sea 2AFrica PerlsLinking Africa, Europe, Asia, and another, Maria, links the United States to Spain.
More than 3 billion people use a Meta applicable daily, such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger.
The expansion of the surface cables to provide the Internet and the wireless communications has increasing concerns that the infrastructure will be targeted during geopolitical conflicts.
Last year, underwater cables were cut in the Red Sea, which is located between Africa and Asia, and Internet service. It was not clear how the cables were damaged, and the Houthi rebels in Yemen denied to attack the lines to pressure Israel to end its war on Hamas in Gaza, according to Associated Press.
The latest Meta investment also comes at a time when CEO Mark Zuckerberg is trying to reform tense relations with President Trump, who had previously been subjected to immigration and moderate content issues. This year, META ended a third -party fact -examination program, instead relied on users to write notes under misleading publications, and Trump’s DEI’s critical efforts fell.
Zuckerberg also praised Trump in the quarterly profit call in January, noting that his administration “gives priority to American technology” and visited the president at the White House.
Last week, the White House mentioned the Meta Cable project under the surface of the sea in A. Joint From President Trump and Prime Minister in India, Narindra Modi, on how the two countries work together.
The statement said that the Meta project “will strengthen global highways” in the Indian Ocean and that India plans to invest in the maintenance, repair and financing of these cables under the sea.
