What if…one of Britain’s most popular farm animals suddenly turned on Kate Winslet? Well, it turns out she’s actually getting ready.

The 49-year-old Titanic singer and actress, who recently starred in the 2023 war film Lee, admitted that the animal she is most afraid of is a cow.

During her appearance on The Late Show with host Stephen Colbert, Kate answered several questions, including what her favorite sandwich was, what her first party was, and whether she prefers apples or oranges.

Amidst Stephen’s humorous questions, there was one about which animal Kate found the scariest, and she gave an honest answer.

“I’m honestly not that good with cows. Listen, no, okay. Here’s the thing. Someone told me you’ve got to learn how to read a field of cows, and I did.”

“If they turn, oh, they’re gone.” If their tails are wagging and moving and there are flies, it means they are unhappy. “They might attack you.”

“This is something I never knew,” she continued. I go hiking all the time and the footpaths regularly take you through fields of cows. And I decided they were going to smash me into the ground.

“There was a time when my mother was alive, and she and I were walking, and some cows were definitely following us. They would watch them slowly, and then they would speed them up.”

After saying the herd of cows following them had “a few runs”, Kate revealed that she and her mum got out of there safely in the end.

“There are a lot of stories in England about people having really bad fights with cows, and they’re very true. So I’m very wary of the cow paddock.”

However, she admitted that she needs to get better at dealing with the sight of a field of cows, because she “knows they’re not really scary, right?”

Born and raised in Reading, Berkshire, it is unlikely that Kate spent much of her childhood around cows – and it is not known exactly when the fear developed.

When asked if she preferred apples or oranges, she revealed that her husband, Edward Abel Smith, couldn’t stand the sound of people eating or cutting apples.

The couple married in 2012, becoming Edward Kate’s third husband after her marriages to Jim Threapleton (from 1998 to 2001) and Sam Mendes (from 2003 to 2011).

After marrying Edward, the couple moved to the countryside, buying an estate in the West Wittering district of Sussex, near Portsmouth.

The couple have two children – son Bear, 11, whom Kate shares with Edward; Joe, 21, whose father is Sam; and Mia, 26, who was born to the late Thrippleton.
