Current House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Los Angeles) aims to avoid the fate of his predecessor on Friday — whether his eventual impeachment or a humiliating 15-round challenge for the job before that — as voting opens for a new speaker of the 119th Congress.
President-elect Donald Trump has endorsed Johnson, but the Speaker of the House has already lost the only Republican candidate he could do without, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), given a full attendance and no “present” votes.
With the margins as tight as possible, the vote is a test of Trump’s ability to inspire — and the leadership’s ability to enforce — Republican unity as the party begins its new trilogy.
