Indian Jasprit Bumrah left the field with an apparent injury during the fifth test against Australia (Saeed Khan)

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah left the Sydney Cricket Ground midway through the second session on day two of Australia’s final Test on Saturday, possibly heading for a scan in hospital in a major setback for India.

The visitors need to win the match to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, with Bumrah the main striker and captain of the team.

He left the field shortly before lunch, but reappeared after the break and lobbed the ball over. But his speed obviously decreased and he took off again.

Television footage showed him putting on his training gear with the medical staff, getting into a car and leaving the ground.

Commentators suggested he was being tested for an unknown injury.

Bumrah has taken 2-33 so far in Australia’s first innings and the match was well placed.
