IT finally happened. After a decade of avoiding the show, my wife and I decided to try the new season of the married at first sight. We consume a lot of reality TV, so not that we have avoided that accuratelyBut something about the idea of watching people are struggling to build a healthy relationship amid a storm of cameras and manufactured drama never found us. At least until we saw the married couples at first sight and we realized that it was already enjoyable.
Drama relationship makes watching addiction. But after watching most of the strange “marriages” season, screaming matches and sofa competitions are accompanied by deep and Significant Music, one part of the show surprised me as really strange. Everyone continues to refer to the epic as an “experience”. From the narrator to the experts who advise the unhappy couples on the drama of their relationship, it seems that the entire presentation describes the experience with a social experience that we do not know the result for it.
As a scientist, I found this strange. We had 11 seasons of offer with more than 100 husbands gathering for nearly a decade. There is a lot of data to analyze and know what “Experience” shows.
This is how I did. The data has collected from the Mafs Wikipedia pages – which is a great comprehensive – as well as a little Googling. I asked three main questions:
-
How many couples remain together until the end of filming?
-
How many couples remain together after finishing filming?
-
How many couples are still together and is it less than we expected?
I have restricted my data collection to 2015-24 to ensure that I have enough information about all the participants in the show. I also thought about staying together after filming for at least one year of the relationship after the show, because it was difficult to know exactly when the people erupted in the months that followed the filming. To separate before the end of the filming, I only calculated the husbands who left or stopped being part of the show before the final decision – if someone or both say at the final ceremony, I think we can say they have completed the experience at least.
When you look at the numbers, the results are … Stark. Of the 107 couples associated in the eight years, 56 (52 %) separated before the offer is over. The most likely result of two people gather at their MAFS wedding is its name within a period of 10 weeks of filming.
Among the remaining 51 couples who made the final decision, the results are a little better. There were 11 successful visits in the group – the husband and wife were able to reach at least one year of bliss. Among these, seven pairs are still together today, which looks good on his face.
In the context, however, these statistics are still very easy. The average length of Australian marriage is eight to nine years, according to Australian Statistics Office. I compared the length of MAFS marriage against ABS 2021 divorce statistics to get an idea of how possible, using a statistical test called Chi-Squared test. This has led to the value of the possibility-or the value of PRIA.00000000001. The interpretation of values P can be somewhat complicated, but we can say that MAFS husbands collapse greatly more commonly than the Australian Mediterranean marriage.
Why do MAFS relationships often fail? It is difficult to be sure. Marriage to a person you have just met a ridiculous idea that rarely works. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the people who participated in the offer are not great in relations by default. Perhaps, in their pursuit of a good TV, the producers may make the “experience” a little loud for most couples to stay.
Or maybe there is something in the marriages themselves. In the American version of the show, husbands A marriage certificate signed When they walk in the corridor, which is impossible in Australia because of the regulations. In the United States, 16 % of couples are still together Compared to 7 % in Australia, a statistically significant difference with the P value of 0.037 on the same square test. Given that the two shows are somewhat similar, we can reasonably say that having a real wedding with a legally binding contract may help slightly make marriages continue.
Of course, 16 % is still low. The show has not been operated only since 2014 in the United States, which means that most of the real marriages they depicted in a much closer.
We can extract some conclusions from the “MAFS” experience. It rarely works. It is much less effective than marriage to someone you already know and assumes that, although this may also be affected by the cameras and drama created by the product. It is rare to choose another partner through your marriage in real life, for example, which was a major new development in this year’s season. The experiment may be particularly ineffective in Australia because couples are not legally married.
Everything that is said, there are two things that go to the entire idea. One is the current nightmare for the dating scene. Marriage may not work for someone you never met, but it may be at least more fun than trying to meet a partner on hinges amid fake profiles and pictures of men who carry fish.
Also, it makes the TV great. Even if we all know the conclusion from the beginning – and at this stage, we do somewhat – the drama makes viewing convincing.
