Cryptocurrency World Map – Blockchaincenter.net

2020
2021

What is the world map of cryptocurrencies?

The map shows search interest for different coins by country, with data sourced from Google Trends.

Google Trends normalizes search data to facilitate comparisons between terms. Therefore, the ratio of 60% for Bitcoin and 15% for Ethereum means that the search volume for “Bitcoin” is four times higher than for “Ethereum.”

You can click on the coins at the top of the map to select them. You can then compare them.

Key Takeaways (2021)

  • Bitcoin’s “search dominance” decreased in 2021 from 80% to 60%, but it remains the most searched cryptocurrency in all countries.
  • While “Ethereum” is #2 worldwide, the search volume for “Dogecoin” in the US is twice the search volume for “Ethereum.”
  • Compared to 2020, Bitcoin Cash, Monero, and IOTA are no longer in the top ten.
  • South America seems to be leaning more towards Bitcoin while the East is more open to altcoins
  • In El Salvador, 98% of search volume was about Bitcoin.

Key Takeaways (2020)

  • Bitcoin is the most searched currency in all countries. This does not come as a surprise.
  • The market cap rating does not reflect the search volume rating. For example, Dogecoin is not among the top 30 coins by market cap. However, it has been placed in the top 10 most searched cryptocurrencies.
  • South America appears to be the most “Bitcoin cap” continent, with four countries making the top ten.
  • Asia seems to be the most open to other cryptocurrencies. (Or maybe they just confirm the gambling stereotype 😉).
  • Germany stands out as the only country in the world that has more interest in IOTA than in Ethereum.

Why are some coins missing?

Search interest for “Terra,” “Shiba Inu,” or “Polygon” is ambiguous because people also search for these terms in different contexts. “Tron” may be overrepresented in the data due to the movie Tron and the Audi e-tron

There are also missing coins with insufficient search volume (<1%) compared to Bitcoin.

Why were some countries absent?

Google Trends does not provide data for all countries
