Charli xcx leads this year’s Brit Awards with five nominations for her record dominating 2024, last year’s Brat – The Guardian. With four nominations each, Dua Lipa, The Last Dinner Party, Ezra Collective and Myles Smith are within striking distance of pop stardom.

xcx is nominated for album, artist and song of the year — the latter for her remix of “Guess” featuring Billie Eilish — and in the dance and pop categories.

But although xcx paints the British music industry’s annual gala a fierce shade of lime green, women are still underrepresented in this year’s nominations, making up 34.7% of the 98 seats. Male works make up more than half, at 53%, while mixed-gender works and collaborations – including The Last Supper Party – make up the remaining 12.3%.

It’s a noteworthy year for some legacy bands: The occasional AI-induced Beatles are in the running for best song, the group’s first nomination since the first Brit Awards in 1977. (Before they became an annual ceremony in 1983, the first Brits to mark the jubilee Silver for Queen Elizabeth II and the 100th anniversary of the invention of the phonograph, honoring the previous 25 years in music, with The Beatles achieving three nomination victories.) And with three Nominations For Songs of the Lost World – their first album since 2008 – The Cure have scored their first British nominations in over 30 years in the categories of Album of the Year, Group of the Year and Alternative/Rock. .

At the newer end of the scale is superstar singer Smith Winner of this year’s Rising Startipped by the industry for a major hit, was also nominated for New Artist, Song and Pop.

Genre categories are compiled by the British Voting Academy and then voted on by members of the public via WhatsApp. As expected, the hip-hop/grime/rap act category includes only one woman, Little Sims, along with Central C, Dave, Gates, and Stormzy.

London jazz outfit Ezra Collective are also likely set to have a breakout year. The five-piece band released their third album, Dance, No One’s Watching, in September, after winning the 2023 Mercury Prize for their second album. “From the Youth Club to the British Awards and beyond,” they said in a statement.

Some may raise eyebrows that a group active since 2016 is gearing up for a new artist – alongside last year’s Mercury Prize-winning English Teacher, The Last Supper Party, Miles Smith and former Brit School student Rachel Chinurere – but the category parameters state that the works She must have one. Top 40 albums or singles in the eligibility period, but cannot have a top 10 album or more top 10 singles, nor have previous nominations for top artist, group or album.

Despite middling reviews for her third album Radical Optimism – which spent just 19 weeks in the UK Top 100, compared to 220 weeks for her 2020 record Future Nostalgia – Lipa was nominated for Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year (for Training Season) and Act of the Year. Pop.

Last year’s major winner, Ray – who takes home six awards in 2024 – is ready to take on the R&B competition. “I’m still processing the ridiculousness of last year!” She said in a statement. “I’m excited to watch Charli xcx clean up this year, she deserves it so much.”

It also features some budding comebacks: Sam Fender is Artist of the Year and an alt/rock act, though he has only released two singles from his upcoming third album, People Watching, due in February; Jade, from defunct band Little Mix, is nominated for Song of the Year (for Angel of My Dreams) and Best Pop Song.

In the international categories, Taylor Swift, Chapelle Rowan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Billie Eilish each received two nominations; Eilish also received a third nomination alongside xcx in the song category.

Rawan said in a statement: “Thank you very much for the nominations and appreciation for my art.” “The UK has always shown me so much love and supported me over the last few years. It was one of the first places I had good luck, darling! It exploded, so this feels very special.”

The Producer and Songwriter of the Year awards will be announced ahead of the ceremony, which takes place on March 1 at the O2 Arena in London. Jack Whitehall returns for the first time since 2021, reclaiming hosting duties. No artists have been announced for tonight.
