James Lee Williams, the former winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race in the UK, known as The Vivienne, has died at the age of 32.

A company spokesperson said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we inform you that our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivian, passed away this weekend.

“James was an incredibly likable, warm-hearted and amazing person.

“Their families are saddened by the loss of their son, brother and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James has achieved in their lives and career.

“We will not be releasing any further details. Please ask that James’ family be given the time and privacy they need now to process and grieve.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race Judge Michelle Visage said she was “deeply saddened” by the news.

Sharing her photos with The Vivienne, she said: “I don’t know how to express how I feel. Dear @thevivienne_ We go back to the time when I started coming to the UK.

“You were always there, always laughing, always giving, always ready. Your laugh, your wit, your talent, your courage. I loved all of that but I loved your friendship most of all.”

She added: “I love you, my love. We will miss you so much, my love. May your light shine brightly forever.”

Vivienne rose to prominence in 2015 after becoming the UK drag ambassador for the US series RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The show sees drag queens compete in front of a panel of judges to become the next drag star.

Vivienne later competed in the first UK series of the show in 2019, which she went on to win after lip-syncing in the final with Wham! I hit your man.

Their drag name came from their love for the designer Vivienne Westwood.

Williams, who was born in Wales, also finished third in the 2023 series Dancing on ice.

A host of celebrities and co-stars have paid tribute on social media, with former Pussycat Doll actress Ashley Roberts writing: “Oh my God! I can’t believe this. This is heartbreaking news.”

“I’m in complete and utter shock. This is absolutely devastating,” said Shea Coulee, who won Season 5 of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.

Another Drag Race star, Bimini Bon Boulash, wrote: “I’m so sorry. I’m in complete shock.”

Williams’ publicist Simon Jones described their “immense talent” and “comedic genius and quick wit”.

“These are words I never wanted to write. Viv was a close friend, a client, and someone I loved dearly,” Jones wrote on Instagram.

“From the moment I met them in 2019, I knew we could create magic together and I became their manager. Their talent was immense and the light they brought to every room was amazing. No one in my life has made me laugh as hard as Viv did, their comedic genius and quick wit have been unparalleled.” she has.”

He said he was “heartbroken and devastated” by the news, adding: “Rest in peace my wonderful friend. You left us too soon.”
