A hidden image, hidden for several centuries, was discovered under a masterpiece of 1570 by Titian, by researchers in Cyprus.
A display of the original panel, which depicts Christ crowned with a fork, is displayed in Limassol, while the newly discovered image is revealed through advanced photography techniques.
The retreat reveals a worldly and interesting scene: a man with a thin mustache, Quill at hand, stands next to a set of papers or books. This Prosaic image stands in a flagrant contradiction with the religious scene Titian, which he later drew.
Professor Nicholas Bakerts, who leads the research team at the Cyprus Institute (Cynx), explained the importance of the discovery: “The painting is secret, and the secret is that, unknown yet, a painting under it.”
The man’s identity in the hidden image is still a mystery, adding another layer of conspiracies to this wonderful discovery. We hope that more research sheds light on the subject of the image and the reasons that Titian chooses to hide.
The final artwork, called ECCE HOMO – meaning “ha, the man” in English – shows Jesus standing beside Pontius Bilat, who headed the last stages of the trial of Jesus before he was crucified.
The painting was prepared for preservation when researchers put it under a microscope and noticed different dyes through Craquelure, or a pattern of microscopic cracks formed on the surface of the old paintings.
“It was like a puzzle detection,” said Bakirtzis.
Using a mixture of non -invasive analytical techniques, researchers at Andreas Betas description laboratories (APAC) in CYI assembled the full buried image.

Based on X -ray images, experts then created an oil panel for a man.
“It is clear that a banker, a lawyer and some professional man in his work space,” said Bakirtzis, historian of art and architectural historian APAC.
A Titian paint exhibition was opened in addition to a hidden photo show in Limassol in late January and will continue until March 10.
Tiziano Vecellio was born in 1488, Titian, with his studio in Venice, he produced hundreds of paintings until his death in 1576.
The researchers know that it re -uses the paintings on the work that has been partially completed. In this case, it was a complete picture, as he turned upside down and drawn with ECCE homo.
Bakirtzis said: “I am not aware of any situation in which we can set the direct painting to safely on training earlier,” said Bakirtzis.
Bakirtzis believes that Titian uses the elements of the previous painting of the new movie, including the use of Jawline men to determine the ropes that connect Christ’s wrists.
This is indicated by a confident artist. He said that the leader, the head of the studio and the Titian himself … For this reason, this ecce homo release preserves the art of Titian. “
